“Volcanic” was created with acrylic pigments and metallic paints. I lay a foundation of black, and then disperse contrasting colors. I also included some of my special metallic powder / acrylic media emulsions. As part of the Galactic Series, “Volcanic” is generally inspired by the eruptions on Jupiter’s moon Io that were first observed by the Voyager mission over 40 years ago. There’s alot going on in this abstract gas cloud. What can you see?

My Galactic themed paintings are inspired largely by the images and energies of the Universe. The original inspiration came from a slide show a colleague put together over a decade ago which showed images starting at things measured on a scale of one meter (e.g. a picture of a human or a horse); and then zoomed out at multiples of ten until the images were of spectacular visions of galaxies, energetic effects and nebula taken by the Hubble deep space telescope.

Others are my own imagination of what various galactic energies might look like if we were able to see them - like Volcanic blasts or surges of enormous energies in the depths of space. Often people see something new or completely different. What do you see in the wide variety of colors, shapes and patterns in these?

The contrast in this piece is made up of various reds, golds, bronzes and copper. I mixed actual metal powder with the metallic paints to get even more reflective properties in the dried finish. It’s a Dutch pour on stretched canvas. The name of this piece is “Volcanic” This piece measures 9 x 12 and is available. This work can also be reproduced in a variety of formats including canvas wrap, acrylic print or metallic prints in larger sizes up to around 24 x 30 unframed.
